Underwater Navigation Workshop
Most divers can safely explore a divesite and return to shore, but often, the confidence in navigation is lacking. This workshop is will teach you all the tips and tricks necessary to master:
- use of different types of compasses
- setting headings and obtaining bearings
- obtaining bearings to create fixes for finding a spot underwater at a future time
- running navigation patterns underwater (we will practice on land)
- estimating distance and using natural references for navigation
After completing this workshop, divers might choose to take the PADI Underwater Navigation Specialty dives (see below).

PADI Underwater Navigation Specialty
Get ready for a rigorous challenging course! By completing several skills over the course of three dives you will become an expert navigator. Dive #1 reviews the basics: estimating distance underwater, using natural navigation, swimming reciprocal headings, and completing square patterns underwater. Dive #2 teaches you how to swim a complex course with 5 or more direction changes underwater, as well as fixing a specific underwater location so it can be relocated on a future dive. The course wraps up with Dive #3 where you will complete an underwater “orienteering” course by locating “stations” underwater and following the coordinates at the station.
