This family contains thirteen species of fish which appear along the West coast of North America and through the Asian Pacific.
Most greenlings are medium to large-sized fish, with the lingcod reaching lengths of five feet. They prefer shallow, rocky, or kelp-covered bottoms, the lone holdout again being the lingcod, who swims to depths of up to 6000 feet.
They are very territorial fish, and will defend their seafloor areas, often very aggressively (especially during mating season).
