Gunnels are a small family of fish, comprising thirteen species. Like the pricklebacks, gunnels have elongated bodies, and long dorsal and anal fins. The dorsal fin is flexible, unlike the rigid, spiny fins of the pricklebacks. Gunnels do not grow more than eighteen inches in length, and can change color to match the vegetaion they inhabit.
Most gunnels live in the north Pacific, with a few species living in the Arctic and north Atlantic. THey prefer habitats where they can hide among the rocks or under the kelp, and are always found in shallow waters.
