Pelagia DVD Recommendations

This fascinating collection, narrated by Peter Coyote, traces the history of life on earth through the development and adaptations of various phyla and forms of animal life .

The majority of the series takes place underwater, and will let you in on such secrets as the inner workings of sponges, the survival tactics of squid, and the gastronomic attacks of the starfish.

The videos combine live footage with excellent computer animations to reallly let you look into the evolution, the physical structure, and the behavior of a wide collection of animals. This is a high-quality documentary that satisfies both mind and eye.

The Shape of Life

One of the BBC's most incredible documentaries, this series narrated by the unmistakeable David Attenborough covers a broad expanse of the ocean environment and its inhabitants.

There are several chapters: "Ocean World" covers a global perspective, "Frozen Seas" deals with the Arctic & Antarctic, "Open Ocean" shows pelagic seas, "The Deep" examines the creatures in the deep abyssal sea, "Seasonal Seas" shows the effect of plankton blooms on the food chain, "Coral Seas" uncovers the hidden life of the coral reef, "Tidal Seas" is about how the tides affect our oceans, and"Coasts" is a in-depth look at the interaction between land & sea. Blue Planet is a collection that will truly deepen and inspire a greater comprehension of how dependent we are on the ocean's gifts.

Blue Planet - Seas of Life

Most of us have fond memories of sitting down in front of the television in 1978 and joining in the research voyages of Jacques Cousteau and the intrepid crew of the Calypso. Return to the days of red hats and blue wetsuits with this collection of all 12 episodes of the series.

The show is interesting to watch through the filter of twenty-plus years; you may have a very different reaction to the exploits of Cousteau's team than you had when it originally aired.

Nevertheless, this show marks an important evolution in the general perception of undersea resources, both man-made and natural. An excellent viewing choice for a rainy Saturday afternoon.

The Jacques Cousteau Odyssey - The Complete Series

If you're a scuba-diving fan of Jacques Cousteau, then this combination of homage and parody will definitely have an effect on you.

Inspired by Cousteau's exploits, Wes Anderson has created a multi-dimensional combination of drama, comedy, adventure, and underwater pathos. Divers will get a laugh out of the inside jokes (hydrogen psychosis, anyone?) and the references to Cousteau; it helps to be a Wes Anderson fan but is still a very funny movie regardless.

"Ned: You don't know me. You never wanted to know me. I'm just a character in your film.
Steve: It's a documentary. It's all really happening.
Ned: Well, damn you for that."
